Liz Cheney’s Ouster is Bad News for Liberals

As the republican party proceeded with Liz Cheney’s ouster from chair of the House Republican Conference, it was not a surprise. After Cheney supported Trump’s impeachment, the party was clear that her days as a party leader were numbered.

Liz Cheney’s ouster is bad news for moderate Republicans who do not support Trump’s voter fraud claims. It’s also bad news for the far right, as it signifies entrenched belief in Trump’s lies. And it’s bad news for liberals, as it shows that the right is still rallying around Trump, a disruptive politician.

Moderate Republicans lose a needed voice

For moderate Republicans, Liz Cheney was a ray of hope for the party’s future. Her stances are solidly conservative, yet she has the integrity to stand against her party when it’s in the wrong. Cheney served as an advocate for reason. With her removal as conference chair, moderates have lost a valuable voice.

The far right spirals

The far right was adamant about Cheney’s removal from her seat after the January impeachment drama. On the surface, her removal seems like a win. But in reality, it signifies that the party is holding onto a lie. As long as the far right is unified by a false claim, it can’t unify around real policy change or progress.

Liberals still threatened by Trump’s strength

Cheney is not a liberal ally. Liberals may be concerned by her ouster because her replacement will likely tow the far right’s line. But overall, her departure may not feel like a significant event to liberal lawmakers and party leaders.

But even if Cheney’s demotion doesn’t concern liberals, they should be concerned by the reason she was ousted. It signifies that Trump’s influence and power over the conservative party is still strong. That strength could grow before the next election cycle and threaten the liberals’ power.
